The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency created by Congress in 1950 "to promote the progress of science; to advance the national health, prosperity, and welfare; to secure the national defense…" With an annual budget of about $5.91 billion, we are the funding source for approximately 20 percent of all federally supported basic research conducted by America's colleges and universities. In many fields such as mathematics, computer science and the social sciences, NSF is the major source of federal backing.  NSF is the only federal agency whose mission includes support for all fields of fundamental science and engineering, except for medical sciences.

Rheinstahl Foundation

The Rheinstahl foundation and ThyssenKrupp study support program offer grants to students aiming for a university degree. Grant-sponsored courses at present include mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and sales engineering. Only undergraduates studying for a degree are eligible for a Rheinstahl foundation grant.

The Rheinstahl foundation was set up in 1960 and seeks to assist gifted students in their scientific education. Eminent university teachers and top-ranking ThyssenKrupp executives make up the management board of the Rheinstahl foundation.

 

Volkswagen Foundation

The Volkswagen Foundation has been funding research projects in all disciplines since 1962. Its mission is to establish forward-looking fields of knowledge. Despite its name, the Volkswagen Foundation is not a subsidiary of the respective company, but an independent, non-profit Foundation under private law with its head office in Hanover. With a funding volume of up to 100 million euros p. a. it is the largest private science funder and one of the major foundations in Germany.

The money spent for grants is earned through investing the capital of the Foundation – currently some 2.4 billion euros. This means that the Foundation is autonomous and independent in its decisions – a strong basis for a Foundation of knowledge!

The Fulbright program, is the U.S. government's flagship program in international educational exchange.  Fulbright grants are made to U.S. citizens and nationals of other countries for a variety of educational activities, primarily university lecturing, advanced research, graduate study and teaching in elementary and secondary schools.

German-American Heritage Foundation

The German-American Heritage Foundation, St. Paul, Minn., has funded new scholarships for students planning study-abroad experiences in Germany and Austria. The gift also will subsidize student fees for internationally recognized German language proficiency tests. The $5,000 gift will support four scholarships each year for students accepted into UW-Eau Claire study-abroad programs in Wittenberg and Marburg, Darmstadt, or Kassel, Germany, as well as in Graz, Austria. In addition, the gift will subsidize fees paid by students taking German language proficiency examinations. UW-Eau Claire is an official testing site for those seeking to earn the “Zertifikat Deutsch als Fremdsprache” and the “Zertifikat Deutsch für den Beruf,” which are highly valued credentials in job searches.  Maybe we could find a partnership?

 

 

German International Academic Network (GAIN)

GAIN ist eine Gemeinschaftsinitiative der Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung (AvH), des Deutschen Akademischen Austauschdienstes (DAAD) und der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). Die Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft Deutscher Forschungseinrichtungen, die Max-Planck-Gesellschaft, die Leibniz-Gemeinschaft und die Hochschulrektorenkonferenz sind als assoziierte Mitglieder beigetreten.

In den vergangenen Jahren hat sich GAIN als Forum zur Vernetzung der deutschen Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler in Nordamerika und als Plattform für einen besseren Informationsfluss über den Atlantik in beiden Richtungen establiert. Dabei geht es GAIN nicht nur um eine mögliche Rückkehr auf interessante Positionen in Europa, sondern auch um das Kontakthalten und die weitere wissenschaftliche Zusammenarbeit mit denjenigen Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftlern, die sich für einen längeren oder dauerhaften Aufenthalt im US-Wissenschaftssystem entschieden haben.

 

German National Merit Foundation

The Studienstiftung (German National Merit Foundation) is an institution supported largely by the German government that grants competitive scholarships to approximately ¼ percent of the German university student population. Awards are made after a multi-stage selection process and are based on grades, specialized exams, letters of recommendation, personality and character, and interviews with staff and affiliates of the foundation. Under the principles of uniformity and open access currently characteristic of German universities, the Studienstiftung serves as the main instrument to recognize and support the student elite in Germany.
