Tuition

Tuition for the Uni Duisburg-Essen is 500.00 € per semester.  This is not including travel and administration fees, totaling an additional 154.86 €.  Non German students in some circumstances may qualify for tuition exemption.

Scholarships/funding

Students doing temporary research in Germany in addition to those pursuing an entire degree can find scholarships to cover partial cost of studies.  The DAAD, German Academic Exchange Service, has a complete list of scholarship and funding opportunities to assist students with program costs.

See:  http://www.daad.org/

The Fulbright association is a prestigious institution that promotes the exchange between American and foreign students worldwide.

Housing

Duisburg Essen offers “Studentenwohnheime” (dormitories) for students on both campuses. These rooms are fully furnished, and range from 164 € -217 € in Essen, and in Duisburg 170 € -210 €.

Another option for students who do not want to live on campus is a “Wohngemeinschaft” (student apartment).  These are normal, off campus apartments that students share.  They range in size, price, and location, but are generally affordable.

The campus Schwarzes Brett (bulletin boards) and newspapers usually have WG listings, or search online before you get to Germany.

Visa Information

For American and Canadian students who want to study in Germany it is important to apply for a visa early, to ensure enough time for processing.  The German embassy or Consulate will be able to issue visas.  There are several different types available for students.

  •   A language course visa, which cannot be converted into a student visa. It is valid only for  the duration of the course.
  •   A three-month study applicant’s visa, which is valid for students who have not yet   obtained university admission. After admission, it must be converted as quickly as possible into a resident permit for student purposes at the office for foreigners’ affairs.
  •   The visa for study purposes, valid for one year. In order to obtain this visa, you must provide proof of admission and financial support for the duration of study.
