March 2007: University Alliance Contract Signed

On March 12th 2007, the Universities of Bochum, Dortmund and Duisburg-Essen, signed new platform to strengthen research and study in the Ruhr area. The rectors of the universities, Prof. Dr. Weiler (Bochum), Prof. Dr. Becker (Dortmund) and Prof. Dr. Zechlin (Duisburg-Essen), signed the unique effort with the ambition to intensify the already strong cooperation among the schools and stress the unity of the Ruhr area as one single networked metropolis. Minister of Innovation, Science, Research and Technology, Prof. Dr. Pinkwart, who was also present at the signing, called the alliance a gain for researchers, students, the region and the entire state.

The University Alliance Metropolis Ruhr will give the Ruhr-universities one single voice to speak to the outside while they remain individual institutions. There will be a joint representation through a shared marketing concept and web presence. An increased amount of bi- and trilateral faculties will be established to combine existing infrastructure and offer students a greater variety of study opportunities. Activities and interests will be matched to secure a high standard of quality. Cooperation in research will for example increase funding by the German Research Foundation (DGF) and chances in the Federal Ministry’s Initiative for Excellence.
